Position Purpose
To analyze customer needs, develop and propose recommended HVAC and related design solutions. Perform and coordinate system design for installation by project management and field construction resources.
Position Responsibilities
- Respond to customer inquiries to assess HVAC needs and project requirements.
- Discuss customer requests and recommend potential solutions, either independently or in collaboration with sales personnel.
- Design HVAC systems for a variety of commercial and industrial applications, including:
- Office buildings
- Laboratories
- Manufacturing facilities
- Warehouses
- Other specialized environments
- Develop system designs in accordance with customer requirements, industry standards, and applicable codes and regulations.
- Prepare schematic-level designs during the proposal phase to support budgeting, estimating, and project planning.
- Develop detailed engineering designs during the contract phase.
- Perform heating and cooling load calculations using computer-based design software.
- Design and specify:
- Air distribution systems
- Boiler and chiller systems
- Pumping and piping systems
- Steam systems
- HVAC controls and performance sequences
- Associated mechanical equipment and components
- Coordinate drawing development and design documentation with CAD personnel as needed.
- Collaborate with estimating staff to develop construction cost estimates for proposed systems.
- Solicit and evaluate vendor and equipment quotations.
- Utilize estimating software and company tools to establish labor and material costs.
- Apply project pricing and profit margins in accordance with departmental guidelines.
- Prepare and present proposals outlining project scope, assumptions, solutions, and estimated costs.
- Follow up with customers to address questions and secure project commitments.
- Prepare and assemble construction drawing packages and coordinate plan reviews as required.
- Provide engineering support to the Service, Refrigeration, and Industrial Ventilation teams as needed.
- Support and maintain a safe and Lean working environment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Summary of Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
- BSME degree in mechanical engineering, registered professional engineer, or HVAC Designer status
- CEM (Certified Energy Manager) or similar certification, or specific energy efficiency related project experience is desirable, LEED AP accreditation
- Minimum of 5 years experience in the HVAC industry
- Good computer skills including ability to work with Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.
- Aptitude and/or experience to manage design projects
- Physical ability to access job sites, including some climbing, crawling and other body movement necessary to inspect the systems
