Position Purpose

The Security & Systems Administrator II plays a crucial role in supporting and maintaining the organization's IT infrastructure and security posture. Positioned as a mid-level role, it is designed for individuals with solid experience in both fields, but with a scope of work that is distinct from the higher-level strategic and complex problem-solving responsibilities of a Senior Security & Systems Engineer. This role focuses on the effective implementation, operation, and maintenance of IT systems and security measures, under the guidance of the IT Security & Infrastructure Manager.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform routine administration and maintenance of the IT infrastructure, including servers, network devices, and security systems, to ensure operational efficiency and security.
  • Apply established security protocols and tools (firewalls, antivirus, intrusion detection systems) to protect against threats and unauthorized access.
  • Monitor system performance and security logs to identify anomalies or breaches, responding promptly to mitigate risks.
  • Participate in the deployment of system and security updates, patches, and enhancements to maintain up-to-date protections.
  • Provide Level 2 technical support, addressing IT and security issues, escalating complex problems as necessary.
  • Conduct vulnerability assessments and assist in security audits, contributing to the continuous improvement of the organization's security stance.
  • Engage in IT projects, ensuring that security is integrated into technological deployments and initiatives.
  • Assist in the development, documentation, and enforcement of security policies and procedures.
  • Support disaster recovery and business continuity efforts, including planning, documentation, and testing.
  • Serve as a resource and mentor for junior staff, promoting best practices in IT systems management and security.

Technical Requirements

  • Strong understanding of network design (LAN/WAN, cloud networking, wireless infrastructure).
  • Proficient in routers, switches, and firewalls.
  • Knowledgeable in cybersecurity (IDS/IPS, firewalls, antivirus, EDR).
  • Experience with cloud services (AWS, Azure, GCP) and cloud security.
  • Data encryption techniques, SSL/TLS protocols, and VPNs.
  • Vulnerability assessments, penetration testing, and threat management.
  • Operating systems (Windows, Linux/Unix) and virtualization (VMware, Hyper-V).
  • SIEM tools for security alert analysis.
  • Scripting (PowerShell, Python, Bash) for IT automation.

Summary of Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Cybersecurity, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience. Relevant experience and professional training in a similar role may substitute for formal education.
  • 3-5 years of experience in systems administration and IT security, demonstrating a progression in responsibility and technical capability.
  • Professional certifications in IT security (e.g., CompTIA Security+, SSCP) or systems administration (e.g., MCSA, CCNA) are preferred.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and projects effectively.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on teamwork and collaboration.
